Why underwater pier inspection matters
Bridge piers, foundations and abutments are permanently exposed to water, current, frost and chemical loads. Damage such as concrete loss, rebar corrosion, scour or cracks often develops below the waterline – invisible to the naked eye. DIN 1076 structural inspection therefore includes the underwater parts. Early detection avoids expensive rehabilitation and traffic closures.
Inspection process
- Preparation: bed survey, visibility and current conditions recorded, hazards (e.g. ordnance risk) checked.
- Visual inspection: diver covers the entire pier surface to the foundation – systematically, with photo/video documentation.
- Measurement: crack width measurement, scour depth, concrete cover and half-cell potential surveys.
- Report: damage mapping with condition ratings per DIN 1076 and recommendations.
Typical damage patterns
- Scour and undermining of the foundation
- Spalling concrete and exposed rebar
- Cracks from freeze-thaw or settlement
Our equipment delivers clear results – without dewatering, cofferdams or traffic disruption.
