Culvert & Pipeline Inspection Underwater: Process and Technology

What is a culvert and why inspect it?

A culvert carries pipelines (sewage, water, gas, district heating, cables) beneath a waterway. Culverts are critical infrastructure: damage to the pipe bedding, leaking joints or shifted supports can cause leaks, environmental harm and downtime. Regular inspection – including the submerged section – is essential.

Inspection methods

  • Diver inspection: visual check of the outer pipe surface, bedding and fixings.
  • CCTV survey: internal inspection per DIN EN 13508.
  • Tightness testing & leak detection: pressure tests and acoustic methods.

When to inspect?

After flood events, where settlement is known, before permit renewals and within maintenance intervals. The earlier a defect is found, the cheaper the repair.
