Commercial Diving: Definition, Applications & Certified Process

What is commercial diving?

Commercial diving covers all industrial diving work on structures below the waterline: inspections, concrete and welding work, cutting, installations, and rehabilitation. Unlike recreational diving, the focus is on technically demanding tasks – at bridges, locks, ports, weirs, sewage plants, drinking water reservoirs and industrial facilities.

Legal basis: DGUV Regulation 40

Commercial diving in Germany is governed by DGUV Regulation 40. It sets requirements for training, equipment, diving depth, working methods and rescue concepts. Clients should verify that their contractor employs certified divers and provides a documented safety concept. Taucherteam TRITON works exclusively with divers certified to DGUV 40 and trained surface support teams.

Key applications

  • Bridges & structures: pier and abutment inspection per DIN 1076
  • Ports & waterways: quay inspections, scour protection, dolphin works, quay wall rehabilitation
  • Hydropower & weirs: trash rack cleaning, weir rehabilitation
  • Utilities: sewage plant & tank diving, culvert and pipeline inspection
  • Special tasks: underwater ordnance clearance, geotextile laying

Process of a commercial diving operation

Every operation follows a clear sequence: 1. Site survey – we assess structure, water conditions and hazards. 2. Quotation and planning – including dive plan, equipment list and safety concept. 3. Execution – documented work by the dive team with standby diver and tender. 4. Documentation – photo/video records, inspection reports and measurement protocols.
